Since its opening in 2008, the innovative concept, developed by creative master brain Joël Ferdinandus, has attracted lots of attention from media, retail specialists and, of course, customers looking for something more.

Concept

The LokalHeroz concept stemmed from Joël’s passion for retail, his love for the city where he was born and raised, and his drive to live his retail dream. It all started in 2008, after having spent some 15 years in the fashion retail business. Before realising his life-long dream, he was at the heart of the introduction of the Replay Stores in the Netherlands. “LokalHeroz is the place to be in Rotterdam if you want to buy a pair of jeans or a pinstripe suit, but we offer far more than that. Our customers and friends come here for inspiration and to get up to speed with the very latest in accessories, gadgets, interior design and lifestyle products for men. Our product range continuously changes in order to stay on the cutting edge. This also applies to the works of art we sell. In line with our LokalHeroz concept, we offer local artists, musicians and other performers a stage to show their talents.  All in all, LokalHeroz is a ‘must go’ for any self respecting 21st century man”, Joël states with his usual enthusiasm. 

Store interior

The design of the LokalHeroz store is dominated by raw, sturdy materials. Unfinished concrete elements, raw steel, plain glass and recycled wood panels combine into an exciting ambiance for the different product lines on display. The materials and shapes used in the interior also reflect those used in the garden which can be seen from the rear of the store, thus blending outside and inside in a natural way. Dominating the centre of the store is a massive optically floating element made of H-shaped steel profiles, which connects counter, fitting rooms and storage area. During construction of the building in which LokalHeroz is located, remains of a historic farmhouse were excavated. This inspired the interior designer to use vintage wood in the counter area, once again harmonising with elements of the garden outside the store. In addition to the interior details based on traditional materials, some advanced techniques are used for presentation purposes. For instance, throughout the store, a flexible rail system provides mounting points for storage and presentation.
